MEMORIAL DAY EVENT PLANNED FOR HEADLANDS
DANA POINT-Headlands Reserve, LLC, co-owner of the Dana Point
Headlands property, is planning a Memorial Day event with the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9934, at the site of the proposed
Veterans' Memorial on the Headlands property. The event will take
place at 3:00 PM Monday, Memorial Day, at the corner of Cove Road
and Green Lantern Street, with complimentary parking at the Chart
House. The event will be the focus of an informal dedication of
the land for the purpose of establishing a veterans' memorial
on the site. Special guests of the event include William Barber, Medal of Honor recipient, state senator William Morrow, William Manes, chairman of the Orange County Veterans Advisory Council, Mitch Higginbotham, of the Tuskegee Airmen, Felix de Weldon, the famous sculpture who created the Washington, D.C. memorial depicting the raising of the United States flag at Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. Marc Ely-Chaitlin, originator of the Dana Point Veterans' Memorial project, will also be on hand. As of this moment it is not known whether or not the city council of Dana Point will be on hand for the ceremony, but it was reported that at the late night city council meeting, after most of the veterans had left, the mayor was overheard remarking that she felt that a veterans' memorial was one of the "stupidest things" to build in Dana Point.
